I don’t understand where the time goes actually. These weeks have been extremely busy.
We had a chance to treat Daniel and a few of his very closest friends to a nice dinner at his favorite restaurant to celebrate his 16th birthday. Shanahan’s Steakhouse of course and they had a chance to hold the Lombardi replicas. It was a pleasure to share this with them as these boys have helped him through so much. Although we were celebrating Daniel’s birthday I really felt we were celebrating their friendship. It was nice to hear them talk about the past but even better to hear them talk about looking forward to making traditions and having nice dinners like this when they are adults.
This past week has been filled with running Daniel around for his final exams and then to an exciting and unexpected interview at the Broncos training facility for NFL network with our old friends the Sklar brothers. But before the interview Daniel asked to go get his hair cut. This is the first time in, um, well, ever, that Daniel has ever had asked for a hairstyle. He has always had a buzz cut as long as I can remember. As many times as I have encouraged him to grow out his hair even just a little, he always just wanted to take it all off. He was never really phased when he had to shave it before it all fell out after chemotherapy and he didn’t seem to be upset when it grew back and fell out repeatedly over the months and months of this happening. It always grew back so quickly and he was always confident it always would. He has had numerous haircuts in the past year because it gets too long to fast. But with all the recent press and growing getting older lately and I think his buddy Mark’s (Haas from Channel 4 Sports) influence has literally gone to his head. He decided right before his latest NFL interview he wanted to get a new hairstyle. He spent a significant amount of time, 30 minutes (and product) on his hair before we headed to his interview. He really looked different and professional. It was so amazing to watch Daniel just jump into the deep end for his latest interview. He walked up to the training facility and in like he belonged. He miked up and talked about the past weekends conference game and the prediction for the upcoming AFC championship. What was more exciting was that they gave him two tickets for the game. Next he went to the hospital for his radio show and aside from a great show we got great medical news.
Daniel’s bone marrow results from his last biopsy finally came in and they were very good. Still holding are the tests we need to stay as is. To keep it simple. All is good and nothing is changing at this point. His donor cells are up to 93% up from 91% from last month and 90% the month before that. Not perfext but better and better.
Daniel’s interview aired on NFLNow on Thursday and it was fantastic and Sunday Daniel went to the football game with Bob, one of his favorite doctors who he has had a very special bond with since very early in his treatment. Bob is a Patriots fan and it meant a lot for Daniel to be able to take him and put their rivalry to rest once and for all. Daniel did some reporting from the game that will be turned into some kind of piece again this week for NFL. WE now have to work on getting Daniel to the Superbowl50 which will be my project this week. Wish me luck pulling out all the stops. Below is the link of the rough cut to view Daniel’s full interview before the edited version aired on NFL network.
